SCREENING YOUR LARGE BREED PUPPY

FOR HIP DYSPLASIA

Normal Hip Joint                                     Dysplastic Hip Joint

  • Any dog whose adult weight will be over 50 pounds should be screened for hip laxity.

  • Screening can be done at a regular appointment with a little extra time as it involves 15 minutes of gas anesthesia at the 12-14 week puppy visit.

  • The screening costs $208.50 for the anesthesia, special examination, and x-ray.

·       If your puppy has hip laxity at the time of screening, we will recommend that you schedule a follow up appointment with our board certified surgeons to discuss a simple preventative surgery that can be performed to tighten up the hip joint. At the same time as this procedure, the spay or neuter procedure may be performed.  The surgeon will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of early spay or neuter.
